For a child living with a serious and life-limiting illness, a single day filled with laughter, creativity, and simple fun can transform their entire world.
When the Ministry of Finance of Republic of Indonesia expressed an interest to host a day of fun and play for Rachel House’s seriously ill children at their offices, my colleague and I jumped at the idea. We imagined a Saturday morning filled with children’s squeals and laughter, in a safe space – a rare moment away from the hospital corridors and doctor’s visits, to create cherished memories with their families.
Crafting Sweet Memories as Tiny Chefs
We decided to host a Tiny Chef Cake Decorating Workshop for 15 of our patients, an activity that will allow these children to experience fun and tactile creativity, while being enticed by the glorious aroma of chocolate.
For many of these children, this would be their first time learning to bake, or even tasting cupcakes!
The true magic of the morning unfolds as these seriously ill children were transformed into tiny chefs; dressed in bright yellow chef hats and aprons, they added an extra dose of cuteness to the formal ballroom at the Ministry of Finance.
The workshop flowed easily in two delightful sessions—beginning with decorating cupcakes, followed by shaping and dressing up sweet choco balls. Guided step-by-step to bring out their cutest designs, the children poured their hearts into every creation. Gathered around the activity tables were their parents and the staff of the Ministry joining in the fun and cheering them on, keeping the spirits high, and sharing plenty of laughs as the sweet treats came to life.
Even as the room buzzed with gleeful joy, where candy-coloured icings make hospital routines seem another reality, Rachel House's medical team was there in full force to keep a watchful eye over the children’s safety.
At the end of the workshop, the proud "Tiny Chefs" eagerly posed for photos with their colorful creations, holding up their custom-decorated treats with big smiles - waiting to get a first bite of their creation.
Fueling Joy & Hope through heartfelt Connection
Held as part of the Ministry of Finance's Christmas Charity Series, the event was attended by senior leadership and staff members of the ministry. However, beyond presence, their active engagement with the children and their families were truly moving - sitting side by side with the children, sharing warm conversations, and offering heartfelt encouragement. Their genuine compassion created an inviting space where every child felt deeply cared for and valued.
Adding Life to the Children’s Every Day
At Rachel House, our founding philosophy remains simple yet profound:
“We are not here to add days to the children’s lives, but to add life to their remaining days.”
Events like the Tiny Chef Workshop hosted by the Ministry of Finance is a great reminder of the incredible impact of compassionate care. Providing palliative care goes beyond the management of medical symptoms —it is about restoring dignity, alleviating pain, and creating happy memories that families will treasure forever.
Watching 15 courageous children beam with joy over their decorated cakes reaffirmed to me that making a lasting difference in a child's life is indeed all in a day's work.
Together, we can create more opportunities for the children to live, laugh, discover, and make special memories with the people they love.
Thank you for your support to Rachel House, making it possible for us to bring joy and magic to the children’s lives.
