San Vicente Hospital Foundation in Medellin, is a private nonprofit institution with 104 years of experience in the care of highly complex patients, we realized that Colombian children need a CHILD UNIT OF THE HEART, the main reason is that, on average, 60% of children in Colombia who have heart disease have a high risk of dying for lack of care and, it is estimated that 93% of those who are cared for in a timely manner recover satisfactorily.
During 2016 in Colombia, 14% of the deaths in children were due to heart disease. In Antioquia, where we are, 10% of the deaths of children under one year were due to heart disease. In Colombia there are only 5 centers for the care of patients with congenital heart disease; Insufficient instalations capacity to care for children with heart disease, many of whom die waiting for remission or spend long periods in cities far from their families, with a high social, emotional and economic cost.
In the last 5 years, Children's Hospital received 2,078 patients under the age of 14 years with heart disease, but the care has been limited to the solution of clinical problems because we don't have the necessary resources for surgical and percutaneous management for alterations from the heart. In 2015, we started with this project for the construction, equipping and commissioning of the CHILD UNIT OF THE HEART in Medellin, to serve the children of Antioquia and Colombia who need their services
We started the program in march 2017 with a surgical intervention per week, while we adapted the services of the Children's Hospital to attend 100 patients between surgeries and hemodynamies. The construction of the Child Unit of the Heart will allow us in the medium term to increase the volume of surgeries to 200 and interventions for hemodynamies to 70 each year; in this way is possible for the children of Antioquia and Colombia to be cared in a timely manner and live to fulfill their dreams.
