By Ruth Konchellah | Director of Cherish Others Organization Kenya
This quarter we had an opportunity to visits secondary and primary schools to discuss a wide of topics, including how to fund raise for the children and how to encourage and support the children and their parents so that the students remain in school. Cherish Others supports some children who have been recommended by the teachers, who are both needy and committed to their education.
To complement these visits to the schools, we met with parents and community leaders to educate and sensitize them to the importance of education. As part of this, we explained how early marriage and FGM work against education and damage health, and are therefore not in the interest of the girl child.
As always, our efforts were well-received by teachers, students, and the community. Despite all the efforts which we, and others, are making, traditional ways of behavior remain prevalent and must be counteracted.
