By Ruth Konchellah | Director of Cherish Others Organization Kenyak
In this quarterly report, we want to highlight the participation of Cherish Others in the annual Maasai diaspora conference held in Spokane, Washington.
The Director of Cherish Others, Ruth Konchellah, was invited to attend the conference to discuss the work of Cherish Others and to make a presentation at a conference session focused on the challenges which the Maasai families face in Kenya.
One of the goals of Cherish Others is to help mitigate and eliminate the challenges which place enormous stress on Maasai families in the Transmara region of Kenya and particularly disadvantage girls and women. Doing so is an integral part of efforts to prevent FGM and to promote the empowerment of girls and women.
As part of her work with Cherish Others, Ruth obtained training as a counseling psychologist so that she could be more effective in counseling Maasai girls and their families affected by FGM and the challenges which Maasai families experience.
At the Maasai diaspora conference, Ruth made a detailed presentation regarding the ways and means by which Maasai families and their communities can cope more effectively in the face of these challenges in order to promote their well-being. The presentation was very well received.
The Maasai in the diaspora are closely connected to their communities back in Kenya, and Ruth’s presentation has already reverberated in the communities where Cherish Others is active.
