The highlight during the past quarter is that Cherish Others hosted a delegation from the University of Connecticut. The objective was to increase awareness within the U.S. and internationally about the challenges which girls in Transmara face, and the work Cherish Others is doing to help the girls.
The program exposed the delegation to issues regarding the impact on girls, and the broader community, of FGM, keeping girls and boys in school and promoting education, and how climate change is making it more and more difficult for the Maasai communities to sustain themselves.
The program included discussions with community focus groups, as well as participation in activities to educate girls and their parents about FGM, and an alternative rites of passage ceremony. The delegation spent time in a traditional Maasai village to learn first-hand how the Maasai live and maintain their livelihoods.
Through such efforts, the goal of Cherish Others is to encourage students from abroad to come to Transmara as volunteers as part of study abroad programs.
