By Ruth Konchellah | Director of Cherish Others Organization Kenya
This quarter Cherish Others provided support for a boys’ soccer club. About 40 boys are participating. The boys are in their mid to late teens. We provided uniforms, balls, and other equipment. The club will help keep them focused, be a source for their energy, and help build their self-esteem. This is important because it assists our work to protect the girl child.
Young men who are idle and have no sense of direction in the region where we work often prey on the young girls which we support. As a result, girls become pregnant, and for this and other reasons drop out of school.
This problem has become particularly acute as a result of the pandemic, and the disruption of education. We have worked hard to keep both the girls we support, the boys, and the community focused on the continuing need to protect the girl child, including ensuring that girls returned to school when they reopened
We have incorporated a teaching component in our support. We are speaking with the boys about being responsible with respect to girls, and to value both their and girls’ education.
