By Ruth Konchellah | Director of Cherish Others Organization Kenya
Cherish Others has continued to educate girls and their parents in the Transmara region of Kenya regarding the pernicious effects of FGM. This has included meetings with community elders and local officials responsible for combatting this practice.
At the same time, Cherish Others is focusing on promoting the education of girls. Students are required to wear school uniforms. Most of the girls in the Transmara region cannot afford to purchase school uniforms. As a result, Cherish Others has donated school uniforms to enable girls to attend and to remain in school. The girls were also given gift vouchers to buy school supplies such as books, pencils, and book bags, and to buy essential items such as shoes.

Cherish Others is continuing outreach to parents, girls, boys, and members of the community regarding the importance of education. Ensuring that girls continue their education helps counter traditional practices to encourage early marriage and FGM. Every girl who remains in school through secondary level has a much improved chance of escaping these practices.
