By Ruth Konchellah | Director of Cherish Others Organization Kenya
Despite heavy rains and even floods in the Transmara region where Cherish Others works, schools remain without sufficient and safe supplies of water. As a result, Cherish Others opted to buy a water tank for one of the schools. The photo shows girls carrying buckets in order to fetch water they will need at school. The need to leave school in order to go to a water source and fill their buckets takes a lot of time away from school work. So by providing the water tank, Cherish Others is improving the quality of life and education of the girls. The photo shows girls walking with buckets to their school.
Cherish Others has continued its efforts to sensitize local officials, community leaders, educators, and parents about the pernicious effects of FGM. We are seeing positive results in terms of increased awareness that the practice of FGM is unhealthy and detrimental to the well-being of the girls.
As shown in the photo, the Director of Cherish Others, Ruth Konchellah, attended a meeting in Nairobi with Andrew Denu of GlobalGiving, who hosted a discussion with organizations in Kenya participating in GlobalGiving. The meeting was an important and helpful opportunity. The group brainstormed on different ways to carry out fund raising within Kenya and on the different challenges non-governmental organizations face in Kenya. We discussed how GlobalGiving can be of help and better our experience.
