Dear Esteemed Donors,
Greetings to you from Health Education Adoption Rehabilitation Development Society (HEARDS)!
Almost 35% of children don’t attend school in the age group of 6 to 14. Children are employed in various manual and unorganized sectors like small cigar making industries, incense stick making industry, match industry, automobile workshops, plastic companies, construction, hotels, sweet and tea shops, textile shops, granite industries, gravel industries and other menial cadre jobs. These children experience high levels of exploitation at work and are very under-paid for it. Their earnings are around Rs.30 per day and play an important role in supporting the daily needs of their families. Orphan or semi-orphan children, children from broken and destitute families are most prone to labour at an early childhood stage. Social and work exploitation force parents to get their daughters married at the earliest, between the ages of 14 to 18 years. Alcoholism, poor incomes of the adults also push the children to exploitative and cheap labour system.
This keeps the children away from schools. However poor quality of education and lack of basic infrastructures like libraries, play grounds, toilets, drinking water at the these schools; inadequate support from the teachers to motivate children to learn; failure in making school an attractive place to learn are also some of the immediate causes for children to discontinue schooling, apart from the prevalent conditions of the family.
As another year is coming to an end, we feel very grateful for the generous support we have received. HEARDS is committed to eradicate child labour completely in Chittoor, Andhra Pradesh, INDIA by way of providing easy based learning for children, awareness in the community, creating healthy alternatives for children and youth to spend their time after school and educate their families about the importance of education and the dangers of children working.
Your generous donations allow us to offer children and teens a variety of academic and artistic activities that enables them to develop their talents and achieve their full potential. The different programs we offer with your help, allow children to build their self-esteem, confidence and goals for the future, keeping them away from working in often dangerous conditions, but more importantly it shows their families the importance of education and a healthy use of free time.
These activities are very important to them, as they represent hope for a brighter future and a chance to enjoy their childhood. With your help we were able to accomplish so much and every year we are able to fight abuse and exploitation of children in child domestic work. However, much more is yet to be done.
Thanks to your generous donations, we can continue supporting more children, providing them with tools that allow them to build their future.
With best wishes and fond regards,
Kuriyakose Sajan
