GlobeMed/PHASE Nepal: October 2016 Update

By Monica He | Director of Finance

GlobeMed is a student-ran non-governmental organization that was originally started by a group of college students at Northwestern University in 2007. They had been a part of another student NGO and managed to fundraise the construction of a medical clinic in Uganda. However, upon visiting they realized no one was really using the clinic. When they asked the local villagers why people were not using the clinic, they answered that they were Africans and they just take what donors give to them. Thus, GlobeMed and its partnership framework was born: to build equal relationships with impoverished communities throughout the world and to help them develop the means to become self-sustaining. As of 2016, GlobeMed has 56 chapters throughout the nation. The Tufts University chapter of GlobeMed is partnered with PHASE Nepal, an NGO based in Nepal. PHASE Nepal's mission statement is based off a three-tier philosophy, that health, education, and livelihood are all interconnected and interdependent. For example, in order for people to obtain access to livelihood opportunities, they need to be healthy enough to work and have the educational background to find a job.

On April 25th 2015, Nepal was hit with a devasting earthquake. An estimated 9,000 people died and 22,000 were injured. Countless people lost their homes, families, and livelihood. Since the earthquake, PHASE Nepal has worked tirelessly to distribute relief materials and provide immediate health services to those affected by the earthquake. This past summer, GlobeMed at Tufts sent a group of student interns to PHASE Nepal during which they witnessed the rebuilding process that is still currently underway. Recovery help is still needed even a year and a half after the earthquake. PHASE has been assisting earthquake relief efforts by rebuilding infrastructure in affected communities, including those of Syangja and Sindhupalchowk, and many other rural communities. This year, our fundraising will contribute to the rebuilding of two schools in each of these districts. Through the funds raised by GlobeMed at Tufts, we hope PHASE will be able to continue improving the infrastructure in rural communities of Nepal and ensuring students continue to receive and education.

Currently, we are very close to our fundraising goal of $15,000. With your continued support and help, we can contribute immensely to the earthquake relief still happening in Nepal. We thank all of our donors for all their contributions. Poverty is unfortunately all too often magnified by natural disasters such as the earthquake in Nepal. Together we can help rebuild the lives of all those impacted by the earthquake.
