GlobeMed at Tufts is partnered with PHASE Nepal, a grassroots non-profit, non-governmental organization whose mission is to address the interrelated issues of health inequality, lack of education opportunities, and poverty in rural communities of Nepal. The PHASE model is based off the idea of promoting self-empowerment for the local communities they work with. Here at Tufts, one of the 56 chapters of GlobeMed nationwide, we are dedicated to developing and establishing an equal partnership with PHASE and communities throughout Nepal. Every summer, our chapter is commited to sending several of our members to Nepal as part of our hope to cultivate a sustainable relationship with the local communities. In the past, our chapter has focused on fundraising for education infrastructure, including hiring teacher-trainers in an effort to improve critical thinking skills in the children and curriculum models for teaching. In light of last year's earthquakes that devastated many parts of Nepal, PHASE has decided to funnel our fundraising efforts to general post-earthquake relief, with a specific purpose on rebuilding the education system.
We currently stand at $13,347 out of our $15,000 fundraising goal, which is 89% of our goal. We still have $1,653 left to fundraise for this year--we are very close to our goal! Our chapter members have worked incredibly hard this year. We have also made a stronger effort to understand how we as individuals from a privileged position can (positively and negatively) impact communities in Nepal. We hope to not only meet our fundraising goal, but to also push for a greater sum. We thank all of our many contributors for all they have done to support us on this road toward global health, education, and livelihood equity.
