It never fails that when the weather goes cold here in New England thoughts of warm homes, well built fires and my grandmother are conjured up in my head. I guess, like the abundant squirrels in my yard, I am looking for a place for my soul to "nest" and wait out the winter.
What a luxury that this "nest" is actually my own home!
Unfortunately this is not the case for many in the world today and especially for grandmothers.
Last month while in Zambia I heard that one of our grandmothers had her house sold out from under her by her own daughter. Now this grandmother is homeless. She passes by Chikumbuso each morning to grab some breakfast and again in the evening to a meal. Each time she comes she sells a few items of used clothing to the widows. I think these widows single handidly pay for her $5 rent each night in a small shelter. But this lovely grandmother is basically alone. Wandering the slum at 98 years old.
Your donations will continue to support her, we make sure she is fed and that she has a place to sleep. Our Chikumbuso community is good at that.
When I think about my grandmother I remember her ginger snap cookies, her white hair and her clean smelling skin.
