"So please, oh PLEASE, we beg, we pray, Go throw your TV set away, And in its place you can install, A lovely bookshelf on the wall."
— Roald Dahl, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Why would Mr. Dahl say that?
Because, in fact, books can be a person's best friend. Books can be a friend who will accompany you on the best of imaginative journeys. They can keep you going all day and even well into the night. Books can take you to the slums of Mumbai or to the revelation of the heavens. All of us know this to be true and at Chikumbuso we are working at making this true for over 500 students. Never really owning books or having them around the home in Ng'ombe books have become a gift that we need to encourage students to open. Once they do take a book from "a lovely bookshelf on the wall" then sit down and read it we will have them hooked. Each day at Chikumbuso teachers are bringing their students to the library for reading time on the floor with the librarian and again another time in the week they are coming for computer classes. It is amazing to see the growth of each child as their reading becomes fluent, as they increase their knowledge of the world around them and as they realize the wealth of information found in a library. We do become better with books.
