Torrential rain in Chennai, India has resulted in terrible flooding. Hundreds of people have died, and thousands of families have been displaced. This fund will provide relief to victims by helping purchase emergency supplies like food, water, and medicine in addition to longer-term recovery assistance. All donations to this fund will exclusively support local relief and recovery efforts from this flood.
Floods in Chennai have killed hundreds of people and have caused widespread damage in the region. Several of our local nonprofit partners are responding to survivors' immediate needs and have asked us to help fund their relief and recovery efforts on the ground.
All donations to this fund will support recovery and relief efforts in Chennai. Initially, the fund will help first responders meet survivors' immediate needs for food, fuel, clean water, hygiene products, and shelter. Once initial relief work is complete, this fund will transition to support longer-term recovery efforts run by local, vetted organizations such the ROSI Foundation and Learning Links.
We believe that organisations that are deeply-rooted in local communities are in the best position to provide long-term support for flood victims. By funding the relief efforts of local organisations, donations to this fund have the potential to build stronger response capacity so that these organisations are better equipped to face future challenges. GlobalGiving will post reports about how funds have been used and will email these reports to donors and subscribers.

When a disaster strikes, recovery efforts led by people who live and work in affected communities are often overlooked and underfunded. GlobalGiving is changing this reality. Since 2004, we've been shifting decision-making power to crises-affected communities through trust-based grantmaking and support.
We make it easy, quick, and safe to support people on the ground who understand needs in their communities better than anyone else.
They were there long before the news cameras arrived, and they’ll be there long after the cameras leave. They know how to make their communities more resilient to future disasters, and they’re already hard at work. GlobalGiving puts donations and grants directly into their hands. Because the status quo—which gives the vast majority of funding to a few large organizations—doesn’t make sense.
