Funds raised through GlobalGiving support our general water fund, so we can use your gift where it's most needed. While we may not be assigning your donation to a specific project or country, 100% of what we receive will fund water projects in the our areas of greatest need. Along the way, we'll show you what that looks like in Ethiopia through a series we call The Journey.

So, what happens when a community gains access to clean water?

Clean water changes everything, especially health. Access to clean water and basic sanitation can save around 16,000 lives every week.

But that's not all.

In Africa alone, women spend 40 billion hours a year walking for water. It's a job you can't take a day off from. When a community gains access to clean water, women and girls get their lives back. Instead of spending hours each day collecting water that can make them sick, they're in school, starting businesses, improving their homes, and taking charge of their own futures.

In fact, every $1 invested in clean water can yield $4-12 in economic returns. It’s a solid investment; access to clean water is perhaps the single most powerful tool for sparking economic growth that humanity has ever known.

We invest the money we raise into organizations with years of experience to build sustainable, community-owned water projects around the world. Our team works closely to ensure that every dollar is accounted for and then provides reports back to our donors. We fund water programs in 24 countries around the globe - in Africa, Asia, Central and South America. Water scarcity, poverty, political stability and strong partner organizations all play a part in where we choose to work. We focus on providing rural communities with their first access to clean water.

So, who's making it happen?

The organizations that we choose to partner with have demonstrated a community-centered approach, excellent financial reporting and a deep knowledge of water project implementation. They are some of the best in the world at bringing clean water to people in need.

Our local implementing partner, Relief Society of Tigray (REST), is working everyday to help bring clean water to communities in northern Ethiopia. They began as a grassroots organization and now they’re the largest operating local charity in the region. They’ve helped us implement more than 3,000 water projects, and they’re incredible.

Meet Daniel Hagos, Director of Rural Water Supply at REST.

Daniel has spent almost 21 years working for REST. He’s from Tigray and leads a staff of over 200 employees that work on constructing our water projects. That includes five drilling teams and 150 hand dug well and spring protection technicians.

Our team asked Daniel what keeps him passionate about his job. Why not work for a large, for-profit company in Addis Abada instead?

"All of us at REST, we’re committed to our people here in Tigray. All of us lost family and friends during the war – and watched the famine deteriorate our livelihoods. I'm here to continue to serve my people."
