Thanks to the generous support of our donors, Montessori Global Growth Fund was able to support the work of Ananda Learning Center in Oaxaca, Mexico, providing necessary funds for two local women from the Zapotec community to participate in rigorous teacher training.
These two teachers, Osvelia and Margarita, have invested significant time and travel to acquire this training, which has been a successful experience for them. This included multi-week internships working with children and trainers to learn specialized skills and curriular lessons for specific age ranges. Osvelia reported on her experience: "The [trainer] helped me understand what the children's areas of opportunity were and advised me how to work with some children with autism and ADD, I was able to notice that the method helps them significantly since they still work in a sensory way with the material, which is a great advantage because they advance at their own pace."
For Osvelia, this training has meant a better understand of identifying the rhythms and needs of developing children in 4th-6th grades, building critical skills to teach math, language, and science and feeling more prepared to address the learning needs of children in their local school. She wrote, "Personally, I was able to notice my areas of opportunity, as well as my strengths in both workshops. This was a very enriching experience that will bear fruit throughout my work with the children of Ananda."
For Margarita, the benefits were similar. Participating in the training workshops provided new opportunities to learn about curriculum lessons and materials she was not familiar with, including strategies to carry out presentations, or lessons, to the children and learinng how to address conflict resolution in the classroom. "[These' observations have been of great help to me," she wrote, "since they open up a better perspective for me to reach and apply within our work [i.e., school] environments in the community."
Ananda Learning Center serves children of families from all over the world, where the majority of children are members of the local Indigenous Zapotec community. The community of parents, families, and locals are proud of their learning center, contributing and participating in its success through their unique skills and talents. We have been proud to watch this program grow and expand by drawing from local strengths and resources to help children learn and grow in holistic ways.
We are grateful to all the donors who have ensured these training opporutnities and the long-term possibilities that will result as these women use their newly attained skills to teach and serve children for years to come.
