Healthy Mothers, Brighter Futures

Thanks to your generous giving to International Health Partners (IHP), Joyce, an expectant first-time mother from Zambia, recently received vitamins to support her and her baby during pregnancy.

“Being my first pregnancy, I have so much to prepare for. I want to make sure my baby is delivered healthy and strong. The vitamins are helping my body and my baby to supplement with the vitamins I am missing in my body. The folic acid I was given will last me for two months, and I feel reassured knowing my baby is protected.”

Joyce shared that many expectant mothers are unable to care for themselves and their babies with medicines or vitamins like this due to the high cost.

“Sometimes we cannot afford all the medicines or supplements we need. Having donors who provide these drugs in such good quantities is a gift. It means my baby will have a better start in life, and I feel supported as a mother. Thank you for thinking of mothers like me. You are not just giving us medicine you are giving us hope, strength, and the chance to bring healthy children into the world. Please continue, because your support is changing lives.”

Starting on Wednesday, July 15 at 10 a.m. EDT, IHP will participate in GlobalGiving’s July Bonus Day campaign. During this 24-hour campaign, donations of $100 or more will help unlock additional funding through GlobalGiving's $150,000 matching fund to support our maternal and child health programmes.

The more donations we receive during the campaign, the greater the share of matching funds IHP will secure - allowing us to deliver even more essential medicines to health facilities and reach more women and children with the treatment they urgently need.

When a mother survives, the whole community thrive

Maternal mortality remains a large public health issue and the main burden falls disproportionally on low-income countries. In 2023, every day over 700 women died of causes related to pregnancy and childbirth, with over 90% of these deaths occurring in low-income countries (WHO). The majority of these deaths are preventable with the right skills and essential medicines and medical supplies. And this is where International Health Partners (IHP), with your support, plays a vital role.

In the past three years we have sent almost 60 shipments to 20 countries all over the world, containing essentials medicines to treat lifethreathening conditions in labouring women. One of these medicines is misoprostol, a medicine that is very cheap but can help stop post-partum hemorrhage (heavy bleeding after giving birth), the leading cause of maternal deaths.

One of our focus countries for 2026 is Sierra Leone. It has one ofthe highest maternal mortality rate in the world, with 1,360 mothers dying for every 100,000 live births (UNICEF). Behind this statistic are women losing their lives during what should be a moment of hope and new beginnings. These numbers represent not just lost lives, but grieving families and communities carrying the weight of preventable loss. These figures lay bare the daily realities confronting families, shaped by fragile health systems, poor healthcare practices, and sub-standard, ill-equipped facilities.

Recognising the immense need, IHP has now partnered with a local NGO in Sierra Leone. Together we can provide holistic care for mothers so they can survive giving life. There are currently three shipments in the pipeline to be send to Sierra Leone, able to serve approximately 100,000 patients.
