We made it – thanks to your generosity we raised £2,401 in the GlobalGiving.co.uk Gateway Challenge and we now have a permanent project page on the GlobalGiving site. With your help, we have been able to continue to assist many victims of child abuse in Kenya.
Since the end of the fundraising challenge last year, we have carried out 8 rescue missions – we took child abuse victims to a safe environment, helped them access medical care and provided legal and psychosocial support. One girl in particular has benefited from your donations:
Irene, 8-years old and from Western Kenya, was rescued by the Childline team in September last year. She had been forced by her father to work as a house help and had not been allowed to go to school. A visit to her parents’ home revealed that the family of 9 lived in a tiny ramshackle dwelling made with dried shrubs and scrap iron sheets for roofing. The parents had no regular income, and the children often had to go hungry.
From your donations, we have set aside £700 to build a more robust shelter for Irene and her family. We are also working with a local church to make sure the children have access to clothing and food whenever they need them. Irene is now back in school and has been reunited with her family. Building work is just about to start - watch out for our next quarterly report for updates and pictures.
Thank you for your continued support. Together, we can make Kenya a safer place for children.
