The 2023/24 season of concerts opens in October, offering chamber music fans monthly concerts that feature longtime favorite CMNW artists, introduce new, up-and-coming artists, and include a collaborative work with BodyVox and Imani Winds. The early concerts will perform mostly traditional classical programming, while the spring brings a new dance/music collaboration and a new work by Gabriel Kahane and Pekka Kuusisto.
Our season opens with the Farewell Tour of the Orion String Quartet (Daniel Phillips, Todd Phillips, violin; Steven Tenenbom, viola; Timothy Eddy, cello) joined by Ida Kavafian, viola, in a classical program of Haydn, Mozart and Schubert. They are followed by two more favorite CMNW artists, Anna Polonsky, piano and Peter Wiley, cello, also offering a classical program of Beethoven, Brahms, and Mendelssohn.
In November, the Catalyst Quartet, our 2023 Artists-in-Residence, shake things up with a program of Latin-inspired works by Paquito D’Rivera, Astor Piazzolla, George Gershwin and Maurice Ravel.
We are thrilled to finally be able to bring the Goldmund Quartet, from Germany, for their first Portland performance. They performed on our virtual season in 2021, but since COVID forced the cancellation of their touring schedule, this is only their second tour of the US. Billed as “one of the most exciting young string quartets in the world”, the Goldmund Quartet will perform works by Haydn, Borodin and Beethoven.
In March, we will present a mini-festival of the complete piano trios by Beethoven, featuring our own CMNW artistic directors, Gloria Chien, piano and Soovin Kim, violin) and cellist Paul Watkins, recently retired from the Emerson String Quartet. Together, they form the Chien-Kim-Watkins Trio, which will perform all nine of Beethoven’s piano trios in a series of three concerts.
The beloved Imani Winds will be here in April, collaborating with BodyVox Dance on a program entitled, “Beautiful Everything”—four performances at the Patricia Reser Center for the Arts in an uplifting program celebrating beauty, hope and optimism.
Our season concludes in May with Gabriel Kahane and Pekka Kuusisto’s “In the Garden of the Gift”, a multi-year creative collaboration of chamber music, story, song and improvisation.
Then, stay tuned for our 2024 Summer Festival, built around the theme of “The Beethoven Effect.” Programs will explore aspects of Beethoven’s writing, and the influence he had on composers for the next 200 years.
Our education and community programs continue year-round. We share the artists from our season with students and community members, especially Artists-in-Residence, the Catalyst Quartet, and the Anderson/Sasaki Duo returns for Year 3 of their three-year residency program. More news about those programs in our next report!
Concerts from October – March take place in The Old Church Concert Hall (downtown Portland), while the spring concerts will be at the new Patricia Reser Center for the Arts.
