The 2022 Summer Festival opens June 27! We are excited to return to a full five-week schedule of LIVE concerts, almost like pre-COVID days.
What’s New: The 2022 represents the first full festival entirely programmed by our “new” Artistic Directors Gloria Chien and Soovin Kim. Although they assumed their positions nearly two years ago, scheduling concerts has been extremely challenging during the pandemic, and they set aside some of their own programming in order to honor earlier commitments to artists whose concerts had to be cancelled due to pandemic concerns.
New Artists: This summer we will meet rising stars in the chamber music world, many of whom have never performed in Portland before. Some of the names who will be new to our audiences include Sandbox Percussion; Jordan Bak, viola; Efe Baltacigil, cello; Fleur Barron, mezzo-soprano; Jessica Bodner, viola; Ettore Causa, viola; George Li, piano and the Sinta Saxophone Quartet.
New Venues: This summer, CMNW will present our Thursday evening concert series at the newly opened Patricia Reser Center for the Arts in Beaverton. We are also holding concerts at The Armory, home of Portland Center Stage. We return to our pre-COVID venues, including Portland State University’s Lincoln Hall and the smaller Recital Hall, and Alberta Rose Theatre.
New@Night: Our popular “New@Noon” series changes to “New@Night” and moves to the dinner hour so that it is more accessible to those who work during the day. These concerts feature works by contemporary composers, which are primarily from the 21st century.
Community Concerts: We have scheduled over 20 free concerts as part of our Education and Community Engagement commitments. Throughout the summer, CMNW will present FREE concerts in various locations, including parks, community centers and even pop-up concerts, utilizing the new “SoundsTruck” portable stage.
Young Artist Institute: We launched our intensive training program for string students, ages 14-18 in June. This program is unique in that students are coached and have multiple performance opportunities both as solo and ensemble musicians. (See report from February 2022.)
Education Programs: After the pandemic-imposed hiatus, our Education programs are back in full force! The Anderson-Sasaki Duo recently completed the first visit in their 3-year residency program; this summer the Brentano String Quartet completes their year as Artists-in-Residence, and we will continue with visits to local music camps, master classes, open rehearsals, Protégé Project, and Prélude concerts performed by local student ensembles including Metropolitan Youth Symphony and Portland Youth Philharmonic, as well our own Young Artist Institute participants.
The Summer Festival opens with a grand Gala concert celebrating David Shifrin, Artistic Director Emeritus, and runs June 27-July 31st. Although primarily a live festival, we will record and produce a five-concert “At-Home” series for those who can’t come to the live concerts. “Musical Conversations” and Master Classes are also preserved as online programs, building our growing online music education archive.
