This project will build a Centre of Excellence for Self Directed Education in Ireland, providing a democratic and self-directed learning environment where children ages 5-18 may design their own learning experiences, and where educators, researchers and policy makers may study learning outcomes in a non-curriculum-led education model.
The current model is failing large numbers of students. Almost 9% of Irish young people leave school early. The reasons are complex however those who reach the point of leaving school early represent just the tip of the iceberg. Many others are damaged by their school experience while managing to complete the curriculum requirements. Unfortunately, in Ireland today, genuine alternative learning environments for children do not exist despite the many commitments enshrined in the constitution.
We provide an educational environment that is flexible and adaptable enough to accommodate each learner's needs in the way that is most suitable for them; a non-coercive environment where children can learn and be respected in their choices in order to develop organically and coherently. Children enjoy rich learning opportunities in an environment of trust and reciprocal respect, enabling them to find meaning, purpose and passion in their authentic learning path.
This project will provide school places for children who may not otherwise access a level and quality educational provision that is appropriate to their needs and abilities. It will create 24 secure, permanent and meaningful jobs in the next 10 years, and have a revitalising impact on the local community, attracting diverse families to the area. It will provide an opportunity for research and training for stakeholders in educational policy and practice, and support to new democratic schools.
