A concrete project to start from scratch and bring the communities in the areas hit by the Aug 2016 earthquake back to life again. With your help, over the next few months we intend to fund: the purchase of a fully-equipped van to sell the produce of local farms hit by the earthquake the purchase of a mobile dairy fitted out with all the equipment necessary for about 20 farmers the organization of an Earth Market (Slow Food farmer's market), purchase of a mobile shop.
It was the 24th of August, a year ago. Four regions in the heart of Italy were devastated by an earthquake. More than three hundred victims, countless livelihoods destroyed and a territory in fear of the continuing and unpredictable after shocks. With the immediate emergency worked carried out, it is now time to rebuild livelihoods and foster growth in an area in dire need of long term participative action.
We at Slow Food Italy have met farmers, livestock breeders, mayors and other people in the Apennines, who are clinging on tenaciously, refusing to leave their villages and their jobs. Their aim is to rebuild and create new opportunities, following a precise parameter: namely recognition of the value of the area with all its fragility and its beauty, which deserves to be protected and guaranteed, first and foremost by engaging social relations and sense of community.
Through this action we will be able to stimulate the emergence of new resilient livelihoods for the farmers and breeders affected by the earthquake. By using agriculture and food as a channel through which to promote rural development we are able to create positive impacts in the long term while adopting a participative and inclusive approach. By strengthening livelihoods for local people we are able to counteract out migration both to urban areas and abroad allowing a long term food security.
