In October 2020, the Coalition began its journey to respond to the economic effects of the coronavirus through the transformative Community Covid Housing Program (CCHP). Together, we have since served more than 13,920 people who have been housed or diverted from homelessness!
The Coalition for the Homeless conducts the annual Point-in-Time Count & Survey (PIT Count) on behalf of our local homeless response system, The Way Home, to count the number of sheltered and unsheltered people experiencing homelessness on a single night in January. The 2023 PIT Count results show an 18% decrease in overall homelessness since the CCHP began in 2020 and a 61% reduction in homelessness since 2011.
Of those counted, 1,242 people were living unsheltered, a decrease of 17% since 2022, and 2,028 people were staying in a shelter, an increase of 18% over 2022. The increase in sheltered homelessness is not simply due to the migration of those living unsheltered to shelters; the increased shelter capacity has helped our neighbors who are newly experiencing homelessness, particularly families, have a place to stay other than in vehicles or on the streets.
Meanwhile, the decrease in people living unsheltered is due to strategic programs such as the CCHP. Your support of the CCHP has supported the Coalition's leadership as we work with local officials, housing developers, and community partners to secure affordable housing for people experiencing homelessness to move into.
CCHP has also allowed the Coalition to address Houston’s encampments and lead the work in partnership with the City of Houston, Harris County, and many other outreach community partners, that has resulted in 98 encampments being holistically decommissioned and 477 people who were once living unsheltered now in housing or on their way to being housed!
Whether living in shelters, in encampments or falling into homelessness for the first time, you played a part in ensuring that people going through the most difficult times of their lives have the support and resources they need to get on the path to housing! Thank you!
