Giovanni's Music Medicine

By Dave Schaeffer | Vice President of Development

8-year-old Giovanni
8-year-old Giovanni

Music Rx recently paid a visit to Giovanni at The Children's Hospital at Legacy Emanuel to deliver a little music medicine (chair-side) while he was in treatment. He was busy making beats on the kaossilator, accompanied by Music Rx on the guitar. Giovanni played for a couple hours which helped to pass the time during his transfusion.

According to a recent study, nearly one in five homes have at least one child requiring special health services. Hospitalized and seriously ill children and teens endure significant pain, anxiety, fear, isolation and boredom as they undergo treatment regimens and hospital stays. They often lose contact with their school friends, see less of their siblings and their interactions with adults tend to focus on their disease and treatment program.  For 17 years, Music Rx has been there for seriously ill children and their families, providing music therapy, interventions and entrainment through an evidence-based, research-proven music therapy methodology. Medical research shows music can play a critical role in the daily experience and quality of life of seriously ill children/teens and their families. Benefits are emotional, physiological and social and can include reduced heart rate and blood pressure, relief from stress, apprehension, depression, anxiety and sleeplessness, better pain management, improved mood and relaxation, and opportunities for family bonding and building social support.

Because of you, we can continue to create moments like these for seriously ill children. Thank you!
