In November and December 2014 Resonate hosted 6 Storytelling for Leadership workshops with 160 girls and women. Participants ranged from young social entrepreneurs, to secondary school students, to members of a women’s cooperative. In all cases, participants learned to present themselves, their ideas, and their work with authenticity and confidence.
In late November we completed our first Leadership Camp with 14 young scholars from Eastern Province in Rwanda. Participants went through our core Storytelling for Leadership curriculum, as well as sessions on setting personal and professional goals, seeking out opportunity, and taking on a role as a community leader. On the last day of camp the students broke into groups according to their home districts and designed projects that would address the needs they had identified in their communities. One groups decided to buy and breed livestock, using the proceeds to pay school fees for young children in their communities who might not otherwise be able to go to school. During a follow-up visit in December we were accompanied by college students who are alumnae of Resonate’s program and who helped teach and mentor the young scholars. Resonate will be meeting with the students in April and July to check in with them about the status of their community projects and provide them with any needed guidance or support.
As part of our effort to ensure that all alumnae of our program are supported as community leaders, we are helping to launch Ashoka Youth Ventures in Rwanda in 2015. Youth Ventures is a program that provides training and mentorship to young changemakers. We are incredibly excited to be able to not only build confidence and leadership through our core program, but to also be able to provide continued training and support for those who are driven to begin their own social change projects or initiatives.
