Community Echoe Responder (COMERES) is implementing a cassava farming and smart sustainable agriculture project in Cameroon to empower rural communities and address food insecurity. The project promotes climate-smart practices such as organic composting, soil health monitoring, and integrated pest management. It supports the full cassava value chain-processing garri, flour, and water fufu-while reusing peelings for fertilizer and animal feed. Focused on women, youths, and IDPs.
The Problem: Rural communities in Cameroon, especially those affected by socio-political instability, face food insecurity, unemployment, poor agricultural practices, and environmental degradation. Traditional farming methods are inefficient, leading to low yields, soil depletion, and post-harvest waste. Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), women, and youths lack access to resources, skills, and sustainable livelihood opportunities. The absence of climate-smart techniques and value chain use
The COMERES cassava farming and smart sustainable agriculture project addresses these challenges by: 1. Introducing climate-smart farming techniques - Training farmers in organic composting, soil health management, and eco-friendly pest control to increase yields and restore soil fertility. 2. Enhancing the cassava value chain - Processing cassava into garri, flour, and water fufu while turning peelings into organic fertilizer and animal feed, reducing waste and increasing income.
1. Improved Food Security: Increased and sustainable cassava production will ensure reliable access to affordable, nutritious food for rural communities. 2. Economic Empowerment: By creating jobs across the cassava value chain-farming, processing, and marketing-the project will boost household incomes and reduce poverty. 3. Empowerment of Women, Youths, girls.
