Cassava farming, Smart sustainable agriculture

Challenges Rural communities in Cameroon affected by socio-political instability face food insecurity, unemployment, and environmental degradation. Traditional farming methods result in low cassava yields, soil depletion, and high post-harvest waste. Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), women, and youths lack access to resources, skills, and sustainable livelihood opportunities. The absence of climate-smart farming techniques and effective cassava value-chain utilization worsens poverty and food shortages. Solution The COMERES project addresses these challenges by: Training farmers in climate-smart agriculture, including organic composting, soil health management, and eco-friendly pest control. Strengthening the cassava value chain by processing cassava into garri, flour, and water fufu. Converting cassava peelings into organic fertilizer and animal feed, reducing waste and increasing income. Long-Term Impact Improved and sustainable food security in rural communities. Economic empowerment through job creation in cassava farming, processing, and marketing. Increased participation and empowerment of women, youths, girls, and IDPs. Healthier soils and improved environmental sustainability.

Thanks to your support, COMERES is empowering women, youths, and internally displaced persons (IDPs) through cassava farming and climate-smart agriculture. We have cleared community farms, trained 55 beneficiaries on organic composting, soil health, and pest management, and set up a small unit to process garri, cassava flour, and water fufu. Cassava peelings are now reused as organic fertilizer and animal feed, reducing waste.

Families now have better access to food and new income sources. As Mary, a displaced mother of three, says: “Before this project, I had no stable income. Now I process and sell garri, and my children no longer go to bed hungry.”

Next, we plan to expand to 100+ farmers, improve processing equipment, and connect to bigger markets. Thank you for growing hope with us.
