Thanks to a last-minute donation (just in time for the holidays) our Cash for Trash program is now fully funded!
This project was the brainchild of one of our staff members, Eka, who is on the women's banjar (council) in our village. She learned about composting and recycling through working at Bumi Sehat but only the staff were recyling at home as well. Eka wanted to organize a wider program for the entire village of 200 familes so they could learn to become regular recyclers in their own households.
This was a pilot program to see if village households would get in the habit of collecting plastic and organic waste instead of throwing them out with the regular garbage and having them end up in landfills. Eka was part of the team of volunteers from the village who collected plastic and food waste every month. She also tracked the statistics of how much was collected and how many rupiah were paid out to families. Plus, she was in charge of the educational outreach program in the local elementary school.
We're very happy with the success of our program. By taking a two-pronged approach, by educating the kids in primary school and also encouraging their familes to save waste and turn it into cash, we have now launched a successful village wide program that is ongoing. In the future, the program will be able to pay for itself as the funds paid for waste by the collection company will be disbursed to people in the village who bring trash each month. Bumi Sehat will continue to offer outreach programs in local schools on a voluntary basis as staff are given time off work to go to the schools.
Our monthly donors will be rolled over to another educational project which is running health and educational workshops for the women in our village. Issues covered will include mental health, good financial planning skills, healthy ageing and health topics such as diabetes.
