Substandard houses made of cardboard, sheet metal, and plastic tarps are commonplace in San Jose Villanueva, El Salvador. Epilogos is committed to providing families a safe, dignified home, a casa digna, in a partnership approach. Families who participate in this housing program are equal partners, repaying a portion of the cost of the home and helping with construction. The repayment funds are used toward another family's home in the future. Help us build another home in SJV.
Substandard houses made of cardboard, sheet metal, and plastic tarps are commonplace in San Jose Villanueva, El Salvador. Families who participate in this housing program are equal partners, and not simply recipients of charity. We recognize their hard work and agency, but also acknowledge that structural elements of our world have made it hard for these families to access opportunities that would allow them to build a safe home-with concrete floors, access to the internet, and a door to lock.
Epilogos' housing program allows families to kick-start their dream of having a stable home. For each family that we build a house for, they repay a portion of the expense of the house-money that Epilogos puts towards building the house of a neighboring family in need of an equitable chance at housing. Many recipients go on to volunteer to support the construction of neighboring homes. This program effectively addresses the need for equitable housing opportunities, while building community.
Equitable housing is a foundation for long-term health, financial security, and child development. The poverty rate in El Salvador is 27.2% nationally, according to The World Bank. Housing is the key to reducing intergenerational poverty and increasing economic mobility-when a home base is safe and stable, finances can be utilized for healthcare, higher quality food, education, and more.
