Summary

Short run: this project will ensure the safety, education and care of 60 orphans/street children who might otherwise be forced into under age mining, child prostitution and other criminal activities. Their education will provide them with the tools for a sustainable future. Long run: students will be trained to apply to university (paid for by a separate fund) and pursue their professional interests; and will be given a regional platform to effect change in the areas they feel it is needed most.

Challenge

In Northern Province (Sierra Leone), the effects of the decade long civil war and poverty related illnesses has led to a sustained high number of orphaned children. The children, whose parents have abandoned them or are dead, face a poverty stricken future. The aim of WYCF is to fight this issue child by child. By providing shelter, nutritious food, clothing and education we hope these children will move from sexual and criminal exploitation to being future ambassadors of a proud Sierra Leone.

Solution

WYCF-SL are constructing an orphanage, for 60, with two dormitories (boys and girls); classroom; dining hall and kitchen; and playing fields. With these resources and professionally trained social workers, teachers and medicare specialists, we aim to guarantee a sustainable future for all WYCF orphans. We aim to nurture the unique talents of each orphan and will encourage all of our orphans to apply for higher education through a sponsorship program and promote long term goal targeting

Long-Term Impact

Children whose lives might have been spent in a desperate state of poverty will be given all the necessary tools for a sustainable and happy future. They will be ambassadors of success and will represent in their communities an ever growing force in universal education, gender equality and the importance of personal health. Their personal futures will be defined by an independence which assures them of their ability to achieve, through commitment and hard work, whatever dreams they hold.
