Summary

This project will support girls from Eastern Uganda, providing an education in the nursing profession. Education is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty within families and the community as a whole. 18 young adults are currently in Nursing school, their education will impact the 200,000 community members within the district of Kaberamaido. We have already seen the students make a change by providing health care services to the community either in the hospital or home health care.

Challenge

Currently 92% of the girls in Eastern Uganda do not complete a High School education, only 0.05% continue to a higher level of education. The goal of "Education for Hope" is to increase the awareness of healthcare education and its' importance to change a community. Currently, the number of health personnel in Uganda is 1.49 per 1,000 population, critically below the WHO recommended a minimum of 2.3 per 1,000 population. The project will improve the health care system effecting 200,000 persons.

Solution

Our focus as "Education for Hope" is to assist, promote and support the education of young adults entering Nursing school. The students complete a 2 year nursing certificate program, training them to provide health services in the community. The students have become educators in the community, sharing their healthcare knowledge and are active advocates expressing the importance of education. Each student plans to provide nursing services in the community after graduation.

Long-Term Impact

The project will educate girls in the field of Nursing, greatly increasing the number of health professional in Eastern Uganda, which will provide greater access to a Health Care Facility. Currently, 12.% of the population in Eastern Uganda are within 5 km to the nearest health care facility, whether public or private. This project will educate 100 girls allowing them to rise out of poverty, changing their future and the future of the health care system. We have already witnessed an Impact.
