Capoeira Cidadã uses the Brazilian art of capoeira as tool to promote social, educational, and professional development for at-risk youth in the community of Cidade de Deus in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
The most successful ways for the children of Cidade de Deus to overcome the hurdles of stigma and social exclusion are through education and economic opportunity. Capoeira Cidadã provides over 120 children with access to a safe and supportive community, educational support classes, and professional development in teaching the art of capoeira, crafting and selling instruments, and performance.
The following activities are free to youth in public schools: - Daily classes of Capoeira - Educational Support Classes - Classes on Civic and Moral Development - Community Service Projects - Professional Instrument and Craft-making Workshops
Through capoeira, CC helps at-risk youth to develop their innate capabilities to move beyond the common cycles of violence and poverty. Youth in the project will also gain concrete skills that will help them lead successful and productive lives.
