Life Skill programme With Youth Girls

A Life Skill programme was held on 10 June 2019 at Bapunagar Centre with Youth Girls from the community.

A total of 19 participants were present. The group comprised of a mix in relation to age, education qualification and occupation.

The session started with an Introduction wherein each participant had to mention her name and the number of siblings she has. The idea was to gauge their status in their families. Most of them have 3 sisters and a brother.

In the next session, the participants were divided into four groups and were instructed to share their dreams and the obstacles that they face in fulfilling it.

The responses stated by them were:-

Their Dreams…

To become a bank manager

To start tuition classes

To establish a business

Obstacles faced…

Lack of finance to study further and to set up business and tuition classes

The trainer then explained the following points to them:

Link between dream and reality
Often there is a big gap between our dream and reality
We should dream big but it has to match with the reality so that we can move step-by-step to fulfil it.
For Eg, to become a bank manager it s necessary to secure a suitable degree in Banking. Similarly, for starting Tuition Classes it is important to start realistically on a small base with few students, prove your worth, earn a name and then open a Class.
Lack of finance as stated is not the real issue. This point was explained with the help of a story.

Learning:

As long as the farmer had a buffalo, he did not have to work hard as he was treated with pity and the village people fed him and even allowed him to graze the buffalo in their fields.
We all have a 'buffalo' in our lives that gives us something easily and prevents us from moving ahead through hard work.
The obstacle of 'Lack of finance' voiced by the participants is the 'buffalo' in our lives.
This makes us vulnerable and we live on pity.
We disguise laziness as being satisfied. But in real terms we are not satisfied, we are actually lazy. Without putting in hard work one cannot attain satisfaction.

At the end of the programme, the participants were encouraged to reflect on what they have learnt for a satisfying future.

Bimonthly Report - December 2018 to January 2019

Hello friends,

AWAG is pleased to share the Bimonthly Progress Report with regard to our project BUILD CAPACITIES OF 400 DEPRIVED GIRLS IN GUJARAT.

In celebration of our hard work, AWAG has been vetted by GlobalGiving for being actively engaged in their community and as a top-ranked organization in 2018! AWAG takes this opportunity to express gratitude to all our donors and well wishers for helping us realize our vision, and look forward to your continued support as a trusted partner and change-maker. What's more, we’ve also received the Site Visit Verified badge because we hosted a GlobalGiving representative.

UPDATE ON ACTIVITIES

Awareness Raising:

As part of building capacities of adolescent girls and young women at the community level, AWAG organised an Awareness Raising Workshops for community women and young girls at AWAG Kendra, Ahmedabad. A total of 46 young women showed their active participation. The workshop created awareness about gender abuse and mechanisms to fight this social evil.

Counselling:

Counselling is an ongoing feature at AWAG. AWAG's counsellor provided individual and group counselling support periodically to all the girls residing at AWAG's Migration Support Centre. A concept based on that of a 'home away from home' in the form of counselling services, accommodation assistance, periodic get-togethers, ensures a supportive environment for a progressive career growth for these youth. Initial homesickness, adjustment issues with relation to a new environment, pressure from seniors at the workplace to increase sales and work for longer durations are some of the common issues faced by these young girls.
