Nicaragua is at a critical crossroads. In spite of the political situation educational institutions MUST continue to provide an education. The English language is ESSENTIAL in developing nations (many use the term 'third world') and English is a demonstrable skill that immediately lifts those speaking it, from poverty. One English speaker can end generations of poverty in one family. Our organization provides free English classes to ALL students. But we cannot do it alone. We need help!
Nicaragua is the second poorest country in the western hemisphere, after Haiti. Now, there are insurmountable political issues in Nicaragua that has wiped out all money and jobs. Speaking English is the one skill that can be a determining factor if a person survives or not. Unfortunately, IF English is taught in public schools in Nicaragua the level of teaching is poor. English language academies are not affordable for the majority and are not accessible by those in most villages.
Our Learn and Serve English Language Organization is located in communities where we serve. All of our classes are free for all students. Our Organization also employs those who were once our students so those same individuals will serve in the communities from where they came. Our Organization teaches all ages, from 4 to senior and we also encourage parents who have babies and small children to bring their children to class as not doing so is a factor of why adults cannot receive classes.
In our of the communities where we serve, our Learn and Serve Organization will produce the next generation and the first generation of bi-lingual children. This will be an enormous achievement and we have already witnessed the impact of in education and employment from those who leave high school and go on the higher education or obtain professional jobs. Often, our students are the first in their families to receive a higher education and not only obtain professional work, but ANY work.
