Canine Companions fourth quarter update

The fourth and final quarter of 2020 is here, and for many, 2020 can't end soon enough. The pandemic has made this a most challenging year for most, and that includes Canine Companions for Independence.

Our organization provides highly trained service dogs for adults, children and veterans with disabilities. During a crisis, like the pandemic, disability doesn't take a break, and neither did we. As of this writing, more than 260 services dogs have been placed free of charge with people with disabilities. It didn't seem possible that 300 dogs could be placed this year, but it may very well happen for the sixth consecutive year.

Our placements include those with veterans with PTSD to children with muscular dystrophy. One seven-year old recipient shared that his Skilled Companion dog is the "smartest dog in the whole world." Whether our dogs are the smartest or not, a recipient may be assured that they are receiving a dog that learns upwards of 40 commands, and will provide the gift of independence that will enhance their life.

Since we opened our doors in 1975, over 6,600 service dogs have been placed. Over 400 people await the call that tells them we have a space for them in Team Training, and have a dog in mind for them that will open doors to new opportunities.

In the coming year, we look forward to placing more dogs at our centers in Santa Rosa, CA, Oceanside, CA, Iriving, TX, New Albany, OH, Medford, NY and Orlando, FL.

We hope that in the coming year our campuses will again be open to the public, and our Graduation Ceremonies, Galas, and  DogFests will again be in person events.

Thank you for your interest in Canine Companions Best wishes for a happy holiday season and a safe, healthy and happy 2021.
