2018 - A good year for Canine Companions

By Bob Bunger | National Director of Development Services

2018 has been another good year for Canine Companions for Independence. For the fourth consecutive year, Canine Companions has placed over 300 assistance dogs. We achieved another milestone in November, when the 6,000th assistance dog in our organization's history was placed.

In addition to our placement success, the organization is expanding. At the Schulz Campus in Santa Rosa, CA, ground was broken on a new training building that is designed specifically for students with PTSD who are coming to our campus to receive a service dog. This new training building, which will serve all types of students will be completed in 2019.

On a larger scale, Canine Companions announced the Campaign for a new campus in the North Central Region. The new campus is to be located in New Albany, Ohio. It will feature dorms for students in training, expanded kennels, and sufficient space that will allow for Team Trainings to be held on campus. We anticipate breaking ground for the new campus in spring 2019.

Our organization is now headed by Paige Mazzoni, who became CEO of Canine Companions in September 2018.

We are training assistance dogs now for the first Team Training classes of 2019. Those classes will occur in the first quarter of 2019.

The financial support we receive allows us to continue to place our assistance dogs and provide graduate follow-up services free of charge. For more information on our organization, upcoming events, graduations, how to volunteer, please visit us at cci.org.
