Preparing for Summer Children's Parties

Dear Friends,

Asia America Initiative thanks you for donating to our ongoing project to help children cope with cancer treatment at the House of Hope in Davao, a large Center with some 300 children in the southern Philippines.

The Children’s parties are continuing this summer. AAI volunteers and House of Hope staff treat the children to selected days of happiness, including a Philippine Independence Day event on July 13th, with snacks, toys, books, and play. It is meaningful to just be a child for a day, feel the friendship, and hear the laughter of other children.

Our partner hospitals provide medication free of charge to children fighting cancer. AAI complements its mission by providing nutritional and educational support. We especially try to instill a sense of a happy life through our toy giving. This is especially important for young children who need care and treatment while dealing with their life-threatening illnesses. The House is the last resort in Mindanao for a growing number of children with environment-based cancer. Many of these children from poor households are already at Stage 3 or 4.

In addition, older children and teenagers benefit from our related artistic programs. Often, these children, whose parents are largely farm laborers, have never had a coloring book or toy of their own. The cuddly stuffed animals become a touchstone of support as they go through their medical treatment.  "We have volunteers of all ages who visit regularly just to bring these children smiles," says Dr. Yolanda. This summer, our program will promote reading with the children, art activities, provide hygiene kits, and, of course, lunch and snacks for good health.
