From 23-25 of March 28 teenagers with cancer and their siblings came together at StayOkay Soest for their annual VOKK-weekend camp. Our camp offers them a chance to enjoy outdoor fun and adventure in a safe, caring environment. And to us it is great seeing young people with cancer and their siblings laugh, dance, make friends, push their limits and just be kids.
The weekend started off with a get-to-know-each-other workshop. During the weekend the group bonded more and more during several workshops, group games, a hike, camp fires, singing, story telling anf of course breakfast, lunches, dinner and a barbecue. Camp is one of the highlights of the year for many children! They meet other patients and siblings and discover that they are not the only one in this situation. By stepping out off their comfort zone, they learn that there is more than childhood cancer and its side effects. They make friends and exchange social media accounts. And on Sunday, when it's time to go home, almost all youngsters have marked the dates for next year's camp in their diaries.
Our staff and volunteers are fully qualified and trained to meet the unique needs of young people affected by cancer. They have the skills and the heart to make camp a memorable and fun experience.
