Camps 2016 for 80 children with cancer 6-18 year

by Dutch Childhood Cancer Parent Organisation (VOKK)

Participating in the camps gives children and young people of 6-18 years old the opportunity to share their experiences and feelings, to find new challenges, a step further in their processing and overcome their physical and mental disabilities caused by cancer. After a weekend participants have the feeling not being the only one and standing alone, they feel stronger, and can better cope with life. Especially the siblings of deceased children can express their emotions and feelings.

Children with cancer have experienced things they should not have at the young age of 0-18 years. And after the treatnebt they are facing all kinds of late effects caused by the treatment, like permanent hairloss, protheses, etc and psychosocial consequences such as reduced self-esteem, problems with friendships and relationships. If these children can talk to others who have the same experiences it might help them in their process of healing en eventually safe the community health costs.

After a weekend participants have the feeling not being the only one and standing alone, they feel stronger and happier, and can better cope with life. This has effect on their wellbeing and menthal health, makes them stronger and fitter to cope with bombs will will com on their path.

Long-Term Impact

Potential long term effects are that the whole family will benefit from the stronger and happier child with cancer. Often brothers and sisters are suffering in this period as well as the parents and grandparents who had to face the fact that their (grand)child could die. The child itself will benefit physically and mentally as boundaries are shifted with activities on these camps and they realize they are not the only one.
