The availability of trained social workers anywhere in Cambodia is scarce, and yet at the same time the proliferation of issues is mounting. Many of the young adults HOPE has worked with over the last five years have faced some of these issues as they simply try to “fit in” following institutional life. In addition many of the beneficiaries in HOPE assisted programmes face their own issues such as parental neglect/abandonment, self-loathing, lack of confidence, isolation etc.
The HOPE Trustees have recognised a major challenge to the work we support, being an absence of well trained counselors to adequately manage the Young Adult Programmes we are championing. This led us to explore what training is available and we have agreed to allocate some funds to capacity building rather than support another
organisation run a young adult programme as best they could.
First Step Cambodia (“FSC”) has established a comprehensive one year training course which has evolved over the three initial courses they ran in Phnom Penh. It comprises a comprehensive six month training course of seven, one week modules. HOPE was delighted to be a financial supported of the inaugural course in Siem Reap which began in early May and covers the following topics:
This will be further supplemented by six months of “Follow-Up” support to include at least four recall days and support forums to share experiences, problems, successes etc. Attendees are provided basic but key social work training no matter what field the participant is focused on (boys, girls, young, old, families). Key to the training is the development of critical thinking which can be applied to any social work situation including working with families.
The impact can be felt beyond each organisation into the wider community.
HOPE strongly believes building social work capacity to address the issues coming to the fore is a great way for HOPE to support the future youth of Cambodia. We all remember good teachers, and have a lot to be thankful for to them. How many of you have stopped going to a gym/language/evening class because the teacher has not lived up to your expectations. Please help us create role models and well trained care workers for the youth of Cambodia.
THANK YOU
