Delivering Emergency Supplies to Cameroonians In Need

By Edward Christopher Yo | Project Leader

Dear beneficiaries, donors, and GlobalGiving Team whom I respect,

First, please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Edwad Christopher Yo, the Project Leader for Cameroon Unites Against COVID-19 Project. We posted this donation page, "Emergency Supplies to Save Cameroon from COVID-19", a few months ago in order to obtain enough funding to be able to implement our plan in the field. Thanks to the people from around the world who have donated to our project, I am now happy to be able to deliver some report about what we have achieved in this challenging time.

To begin, let me re-state the background for this project:

"Cameroon is currently suffering from both socio-political tension induced by the Anglophone Crisis as well as the COVID-19 health pandemic. This double burden has led to food insecurity, violation of human rights, and uncontrollable spread of the virus. Cameroon Association of Active Youths (CAMAAY) has been working together with a team of United Nations Online Volunteers to develop a COVID-19 relief project based in Cameroon. This project targeted 1000 people across the city, to focus on the prevention and education of COVID-19. The project's scope of work includes dissemination fo reliable information on COVID-19, a social media campaign, media campaign, mass campaign on the field, provision of non-medical masks for the public, and provision of soap and food for vulnerable population."

From the start of the campaign up to present, the CAMAAY team on the ground has been able to achieve partial results with positive response from the public. We were able to work with the communities in producing non-medical masks and then distribute them to mainly children and mothers. However, the number is still not optimum to achieve adequate protection from the virus. Therefore, we hope to secure more funding in order to distribute more masks to families and vulnerable populations including the elderly and people with comorbidities. Moreover, we already printed various educational materials such as educational T-shirts, large educational posters to be put in public places, and banners (photos attached). We hope that these health materials that we had developed would be able to empower the people in Bamenda, Cameroon to protect themselves. We believe that self-awareness and willingness to protect ourselves are crucial in ending this pandemic. The team was also able to deliver soaps and several food supplies to some families in dire need. Some supplies were hard to find due to the ongoing pandemic that brings economic crisis to suppliers and producers.

In the near future, we hope to obtain more funding in order to achieve complete and more satisfying results. Our end goal is, of course, to help Cameroon eventually end the pandemic. Although our target area may be small, we believe that changes need to start from the lowest level.
