Virtual Academy course on SRH: Making Informed Choices
By Eleanor Milburn - Assistant Director
The young women in Uganda have now completed four of the eight Virtual Academy modules. Most recently, they completed the course on Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH). The SRH curriculum was adapted from one first written for MindLeaps' program in Rwanda in 2018. It helps youth participants to make informed choices regarding their reproductive health. Each week, the curriculum covers lessons on basic anatomy, puberty and hygiene, communication and consent in relationships, decision-making, STIs and HIV/AIDS, pregnancy, parenting, and contraception. It also discusses healthy relationships, family issues and cultural expectations that affect girls and boys.
The students met daily to learn the topic from the teacher and TAs. After each week's topic, the students completed homework via google forms. Also, throughout the term, the students were able to submit any SRH questions they had via an anonymous google form. As the "final exam" for the course, students completed a final reflection exercise to demonstrate their knowledge on a topic. The projects covered subjects such as puberty and gender equity, and the students submitted them through different media including film, poetry, drawings, and dance.
The second phase of the program is also growing. Dance classes resumed post-Covid lockdowns at the MindLeaps Studio in Kampala and at MindLeaps' partner organization Agape. Plus, staff development continues for the dance teachers through a Train The Trainer led by Program Director Bashir Karenzi.
