NBCC Learner Preparation Continues Virtually

NBCC LEARNER PREPARATION CONTINUES VIRTUALLY

Emergination Africa has successfully managed to kick off the National Business Case Competition 2020 with 120 government, mission and private schools in Zimbabwe signing up for the program. The purpose of the program is to develop 16 to 18 year old learners to develop with the relevant entrepreneurial skills and competencies required to develop Africa's future economy. We pleased to let you know that despite the COVID-19 pandemic and school closure our learners have managed to continue with preparation before presenting their business ventures. From your generous contributions 10 learner captains from rural schools participating in the program have managed to lead their teams in developing their business ventures virtually as they continue to work remotely due to schools being closed. Below are some of the activities learner captains have been engaged in during the lockdown.

LOCKDOWN PHOTO AND VIDEO CHALLENGE

We are excited to present our top 3 winning pictures of the lockdown photo challenge with learners busy working on their tasks. In order to make learners work more fun and exciting during the lockdown, we lodged a lockdown photo challenge in the learners WhatsApp groups. In the challenge, learners had to post pictures while working on their cases at home. Interesting pictures of learners were received showing how dedicated and engaged they were while working on the business case exercises. We also posted a team captain video challenge on our social media pages and in this challenge, team captains had to record a 5 minute video clip telling us how the NBCC journey has impacted them and the leadership lessons they have drawn from the role of being a captain.

TEAM CAPTAIN SPOTLIGHT

We are excited to spotlight Tapiwa, the team Captain for Gokomere High School in Masvingo. Emergination Africa is driven to bring out the best in learners by identifying, nurturing and channeling talent and passion. During the lockdown, we recognized the positive work that Tapiwa is doing. He became Emergination Africa's first Honor Student to receive and honor badge. The honor is in recognition of his determination, focus, drive and a promising future. During lockdown, Tapiwa is ensuring that the Gokomere NBCC team continues to work on their case using the teams WhatsApp group.

TEACHER COACH SPOTLIGHT

When teachers evolve, education progresses. Here, we spotlight Mr. Muzungu of Nyatsime College in Harare. During this lockdown period, we have also managed to identify more engaged teachers as schools continue to work on their cases using WhatsApp platforms. Mr. Muzungu remains engaged and actively involved in facilitating the work of his team. He has shown that the classroom is not the only place where meaningful engagement can take place. Having gone through the Teacher Training Program, he utilizes 21st century strategies by providing problem based and research-driven tasks that allow for interactive learning during group discussions online. Using facilitative strategies and creating an environment in which learners are free to express their ideas has kept learners involved and active carrying out the NBCC 2020 tasks. By adapting to personal and social change, lifelong learning occurs.

Training for Business Studies Teachers in Zimbabwe

Training for Business Studies Teachers in Zimbabwe

Emergination Africa successfully trained 81 Business Studies teachers from 81 government, mission and private schools in Zimbabwe. The purpose of the training was to train teachers from schools that will participate in the National Business Case Competition (NBCC) this year. The teacher training program served as an opportunity to equip, empower, excite and enlighten teachers with relevant competencies that will aid learners in developing, perfecting and presenting their business ventures. From your generous donations 27 teachers from rural government schools in Zimbabwe were able to attend the teacher training. At Emergination Africa we strive to foster teacher inclusion as teachers will be the first point of contact with our learners and pivotal to the development of learners’ mindsets and attitudes toward opportunities. Below are some of the activities teachers went through during the training from all 10 Provinces of Zimbabwe.

Teachers Developing Solutions Based on a Business Model Canvas

Across the 10 provinces, teachers had the opportunity to engage in completing a business model canvas as a prelude to the activity they are supposed to facilitate in their schools as they seek to find solutions to an identified business challenge within their communities and provinces. The business model canvas exercise falls under Prototype Development, a key module key to our NBCC this year. Learners, through their teacher coaches, will be expected to develop new business ventures using the business model canvas as a guide. Ensuring that teachers are knowledgeable on the components they are supposed to lead students through is a critical element of the NBCC’s identify, nurture and channel process. Teachers left the workshop more enlightened on business development and innovation strategies than they were before.

Teachers going through a culture and mindset change and ICT tools Session

Culture and mindset change is the cornerstone of learner development, thus teachers went through a session in which change of attitude toward learners, technology, teaching methodologies and learning outcomes were discussed. Teachers indicated that there are many challenges associated with the introduction of ICT in education such as lack of ICT tools and embedded attitudes towards change. The session on culture and mindset change raised much debate. It emerged that future workshops would require school heads, ICT teachers and NBCC teacher coaches to be present for progressive dialogue to take place. Teachers were excited to learn of various applications they can use to unlock learner knowledge and increase participation. Below are responses given by teachers using Mentimeter.
