It is time for an update on what has happened at ADISA since September, when we first started this fundraising project.
Because of the great response and support from all of you, ADISA have now been able to purchase the shuttle bus needed for improving the living conditions of the children at our school, Escula de Educación Especial. The children get transportation that is adapted to their needs and are able to attend school without any problems or difficulties. This is great news, because not only can the children attend school and take part of the other services that ADISA can provide (such as physiotherapy) they can also attend their medical appointments in Guatemala City. The purchase has strengthened ADISA in its work for improving the situation for people with disabilities.
Andreina is one of the many children that have benefited from the purchase of the new shuttle bus. This is her story:
Andreina is a two year old little girl with a lot of energy. She likes to play and feed the chickens that her family owns. Her parents were very happy and it brought them a lot of joy when they got the information that they were expecting a child. But when Andreina was born, her parents got worried when they saw that she was born with a chapped lip (cleft palate). The first months were very hard for Andreina, because of the chapped lip she could not be breast-fed and the breast milk came out through her nose. Her mother was desperate for help.
The midwife that helped Andreinas mother to give birth, referred the family to ADISA to get help. ADISA developed an intervention plan for Andreina and when she was 6 months old she had her first operation in order to get her lips sealed. Since then the situation has improved, everybody are pleased with the results so far. Her parents had never left the village before, but now they travel every three months because of Andreinas condition. The shuttle bus passes by their house at three o’clock in the morning. Thanks to the dedication and commitment by her parents, Andreina will soon get her second surgery. The happiness and joy have returned to the family, knowing that in a few years, Andreina will no longer have these problems.
The future of the shuttle bus is not completely safe yet. We still need to reach our fundraising goal of $5000 to be able to afford the expenses that is needed to keep the shuttle bus up and running.
