The burned hand of a child

The burned hand of a child
A burn is perhaps the biggest trauma that one can go through. Major burns not only leave scars, but sometimes result in the loss of limbs. All of this can lead to future disability and loss of independence. For a child growing up, burns will mean long term rehabilitation and repeated surgeries that will affect schooling, but also dealing with psychological issues like self-esteem and self-confidence as the child prepares to go back to school. Healing the hands of a child

Healing the hands of a child
Without the use of his hands, this child won't be able to live independently. Therapists use exercises and games to help the child regain hand function. (view small | med | large | orig)

Splints help fight scar contracture

Splints help fight scar contracture
As burn wounds heal, the scars will contract, which then results in deformity. Splints help maintain the body into a correct position to fight contracture. (view small | med | large | orig)

Re-learning how to write

Re-learning how to write
The long process of rehabilitation means that children will be away from school for a long time. Therapists help the child prepare to go back to school by strengthening his capacity to carry out activities of daily living, like writing. (view small | med | large | orig)

When simple gestures become impossible

When simple gestures become impossible
After burns, the simple gesture of picking up a pin or even a pen becomes impossible due to scar contracture. Some activities focus on helping burn survivors regain these fine motor skills. (view small | med | large | orig)

Stretching to improve motion

Stretching to improve motion
As scars contract, they make it difficult to raise arms. With a limited range of motion, how can burn survivors eat or even dress themselves? Stretching helps fight contracture and regain flexibility. (view small | med | large | orig)

Pressure garments help control the growth of scar

Pressure garments help control the growth of scar
As burned skin starts to heal, it will form scars which, if left untreated, will grow and contract, thus leading to limb deformity and loss of function. By putting pressure on the scars, the garments help prevent these complications. Pressure garments can be uncomfortable, but burn survivors must wear them at least 23 hours a day, sometimes for up to two years, in order to achieve the best result. Custom-made pressure garments

Custom-made pressure garments
Sunshine Rehabilitation Center makes pressure garments for burn survivors, measuring, sewing and adjusting garments to achieve the best fit and therapeutic effect. (view small | med | large | orig)

Peer support during the long process of recovery

Peer support during the long process of recovery
The road to rehabilitation and recovery is long and difficult. Sunshine Rehabilitation Center becomes a place where peer support emerges and develops, with "senior" burn survivors sharing their experience and encouraging new burn survivors. (view small | med | large | orig)
