Producers and Artisans Fair

By Cecilia Monges | Project Leader

In an effort to showcase the crafts and products of the Qom indigenous artisans and other non-indigenous entrepreneurs and help them generate revenue, a fair was held in the city of Benjamín Aceval with the support of local authorities. This event encouraged the collective entrepreneurial spirit through the demonstration of their talents, one example being basket weaving using natural materials like reed, Karanday (South American palm yielding a wax similar to carnauba wax), and cattail.

The fair was also an opportunity to showcase the agricultural production of the community, which is a major source of income, as well as nutrition, for many producer families in the area. The Cerrito soil is characterized by its fertility and this was noticeable at the fair as there were many organic and natural products. Other items that were being sold at the fair were flowerpots, fabrics, sweets, homemade meals, clothes, jewelry, cleaning products, among others.

In the past few years, the Producers and Artisans fair has been held four times with more microentrepreneurs joining the event each time. Currently, they are in the process of forming a “fair committee”, which would improve communication and cooperation among them, as well as empower them and give them a voice.
