Unemployment, and financial empowerment for young people is a major development challenge in PNG, and Cufa addresses this through our internationally awarded Children's Financial Literacy program in Port Moresby. This project will recruit 6 community volunteers drawn from the high population of unemployed youth in Port Moresby, and provide ongoing training, support, and mentoring to deliver financial literacy concepts to children in primary school across the capital over three months.
A majority of PNG youth face severe hardship through a combined lack of financial education, and minimal formal employment opportunities. These issues have led to a youth unemployment rate of 62 percent as of 2020, and decreased social cohesion; particularly in the urban centers. Despite the growing PNG economy, the lack of formal employment and knowledge of financial resource management will compound over time, and lead to an increasingly marginalised generation.
By providing mentorship and learning opportunities to young people as trainers, and delivering financial literacy to children, this project will provide the knowledge, skills, and experiences to assist young people have brighter and stable futures. Not only will the volunteers be more confident in their own abilities, but they will also be gaining an allowance, practical experience, and developing networks to assist with gaining formal employment after the project's completion.
By providing opportunities and training to unemployed youth, and the knowledge of financial literacy, we are setting them up for a life of success in their formative years. Combined with a positive and supportive environment in volunteering, it ensures they are more likely to continue providing back to their communities throughout their lives.
