As the summer break gave way to fall in Niger, the question of whether schools would reopen hung in the balance. The fate of education for our students was uncertain between July's coup and the recent announcements of a 40% cut to the national budget, so we are absolutely thrilled to share that schools are open again! Students are flooding into the classroom ready to continue their education, and RAIN’s staff is ready to support them as they delve into their studies. In our last class, 100% of our students who took the national BEPC exam passed, and we are excited to see what our students accomplish in the coming months.
This year, RAIN's team is thrilled to support over 2,000 elementary and middle school students in their educational journeys and beyond. We're also welcoming a record number of students at the Agadez Learning Center (ALC). Especially during these difficult times, we refuse to turn any qualifying students away, but as rooms quickly fill up, we recognize the rapidly increasing need to expand our accommodations at the ALC to make room for more eager students. During these challenging times, accessing education opens opportunities that can change a student’s life – and RAIN's team is committed to ensuring that rural students have access to our education programs and unwavering support at the Agadez Learning Center.
Hearing our students share their experiences puts the importance of this support into perspective. Students like Fatima describe the impact the ALC has on her life:
"The Agadez Learning Center (ALC) impressed me with its study programs, dormitories, food, advisory supports, and students of different ethnic groups from different areas of the country. In my new middle school, the most impressive things are the classrooms, offices, sports fields, and school uniforms.
When I finish my studies, I would like to become a primary school teacher, to live and not depend on anyone, and to help my little brothers and sisters in my village.”
Your support empowers students like Fatima and her peers to forge a path of promise and possibility in the face of adversity. Please consider giving today and sharing RAIN’s mission with your friends and family to expand and strengthen our impact for students in Niger.
