Dear COHI Community,
Can you believe this year has come to a close? With all of the struggles and obstacles that came with it, we've also learned a lot of important lessons from this tumultuous 2020: to rely on community, to emphasize mutuality, and to encourage unity.
That's why COHI launched our COVID-19 Fund, a resource for undocumented women and children who have been harmed by the pandmeic and the economic devastation its caused. We've been able to cover the cost of legal fees for asylum seekers, rent for parents who've lost their jobs, wifi for children new to online learning, and medical visits for those afflicted by the coronavirus.
Without documentation, these families do not have insurance and are therefore deterred from seeking medical care. Even for those who are able to pay the cost, the fear of deportation keeps many of them from entering medical spaces. The economic effects of this pandemic are even worse. This population is over-represented in the jobs hit hardest by this depression: low-wage, service work.
That's why we'll be continuing our work into the new year to ensure that this vulnerable population is not overlooked. Will you join us in supporting those who are too often left behind?
In Gratitude,
COHI Staff & Board
