Some referrals come through official channels. This one came from within the community — Johnny, an apprentice from PRoTechos' ninth carpentry class and a Cabo Rojo native himself, who knew that Daisy, in the Puerto Real sector of his hometown, was living under a zinc roof so deteriorated that rain poured through.
Daisy G. had spent years unable to get help — not because her need wasn't real, but because of paperwork. Her home is titled in her late father's name, which disqualified her from federal assistance. A municipal debt tied to the property blocked local aid, even as the family worked on a payment plan to resolve it. Daisy's household fell into the gap where so many Puerto Rican families live: too poor to repair, too entangled in inherited-property bureaucracy to qualify for help.
So the zinc kept deteriorating, and the rain kept coming in.
Nearly Two Years in the Queue
We first evaluated Daisy's home in 2024. We are honest with our community about this: the need across Puerto Rico exceeds our capacity, and her home waited in our queue for nearly two years while we completed other urgent projects and checked in periodically on the family. In January 2026, thanks to private funding granted to PRoTechos to address pending projects, our evaluation team returned.
Life had changed. Daisy's son, daughter-in-law, and grandchildren had relocated to the U.S. mainland to seek better opportunities — a story repeated in thousands of Puerto Rican families. Daisy now lives alone, cares for her dogs, stays active in her church, and is studying nursing. Still under a roof that leaked.
The Transformation
Over 17 days between January 30 and February 20, 2026, a six-person PRoTechos team — 816 hours of work — replaced the zinc roofing across the entire home, partially reconstructed a room, and brought in an electrician to safely elevate the electrical connections.
Daisy did not simply watch the work happen. Every day the team was on site, she went out of her way to make sure the crew was taken care of — from preparing lunch to helping manage the debris. Once the roof was finished, she expressed her interest in joining our next volunteer cohort. Her studies don't allow the time commitment yet, but she remains in contact with our team.
The Loop That Keeps Giving
This is what makes Daisy's story matter beyond one roof. An apprentice we trained in her own hometown referred her. Now she refers others in her community who need help. Her nursing studies, her church, her people — Daisy is exactly the kind of community anchor our Learn and Serve model is built to strengthen.
